I was presented with the opportunity to review the Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake, and this one is a very interesting case. I never played the original, but after reviewing the synopsis and hearing such wonderful feedback about the game online, I began to get excited. So when the opportunity came for me to review this title, I immediately accepted..

I’ve spent quite a bit of time with the game, and I have decided to share my thoughts in a review for those of you who are considering buying it. In this review, I will share my thoughts on the gameplay, story, and many other important game elements. At the end, I’ll provide you with my official rating, as well as let you know if I recommend it.

I’ll start by providing you with a brief synopsis of this game for those of you who may be coming across this title for the first time.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake is a puzzle and adventure game, and it’s available to play on PlayStation 5, Microsoft Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S. For this review, I played this game on my Xbox Series X console.

In Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake, you’ll play as two brothers who are on a journey to save their sick father. The journey these brothers undertake is full of adventure, loss, discovery, and mystery. You’ll explore the world, solve puzzles, and make new friends along the way.

As I reminder, I never played the original but have heard great things about it, but the remake didn’t necessarily blow me away at the start of the story. I was immediately thrown off because a fictitious language is used for the character dialogue, and adding to this you control both brothers individually using the controller thumbsticks. These elements made the game difficult to understand and navigate in the beginning, but thank God for YouTube tutorials and walkthrough videos as they helped me get through the early stages of this game. Once I got a handle on the game, its mechanics, and what it was trying to do I did begin to enjoy my playthrough.

The Gameplay

I like how the developers tried to provide us with an innovative and unique gameplay experience here. Yes, trying to move both brothers initially is a little rocky, but this is also an essential gameplay mechanic as it’s needed to solve the game’s many puzzles. The older brother is stronger and can pull levers, and even help boost the younger one up to certain ledges. The younger one can pass through narrow spaces which is helpful to solve some of the puzzles you’ll face.

I can’t say I learned to love how this game plays, but I did get used to it and over time I did come to enjoy the sense of accomplishment I felt once I completed a puzzle that was giving me a challenge. The primary driving force to complete these puzzles was to finish the game’s story, which I say is so intriguing that the gameplay mechanics almost became a non-factor for me.

The Story

The way the story is told is extremely impressive. There isn’t very much in terms of dialogue, and instead, the characters will use much of their physical bodies, and facial animations to express different elements of the story. Combine this with how beautiful the world looks, and the many different places you’ll explore and you have a combination that is sure to leave you wanting more. The story is slow to start, but once the brothers get going on their journey, the world opens up and only gets more interesting the longer you play it.

The Visuals

Now this game is BEAUTIFUL! I enjoy that there are benches placed throughout the world, so you can sit and take in all of the beautiful scenery. One of my favorite visual levels is a time when both brothers are traveling at night, and have to fight off hungry wolves. You have to keep the younger brother close while waving a torch around to scare the animals off. Visually it is so impressive, and I enjoyed it. If you’re not interested in playing this game for the story, I’d recommend checking it out for its visuals. You can tell the developers put a ton of time into making this remake an enjoyable experience in every aspect.
