MultiVersus – Overview, Characters, & How To Play

The MULTIVERSUS open beta is now available to all players on a variety of different gaming platforms. MULTIVERSUS is a free-to-play cross-platform brawler developed by Player First Games, and published by Warner Bros., that let’s you compete against other players in a similar to style to another popular franchise, Super Smash Brothers. Since this game is set in the Warner Bros. Universe, MULTIVERSUS promises to separate itself from other games in this genre by adding a diverse cast of characters, unlockable cosmetics, character skins, profile icons, and more which will be revealed in future seasons. In my MULTIVERSUS overview, I’ll be sharing my initial reaction to the overall gameplay, and set up. I’ll also let you know where you can play this game if you’re interested, and share what information we know about future seasons.

How Is MULTIVERSUS?

I had a few mixed feelings while playing MULTIVERSUS. In this overview, I may compare this game to Super Smash Brothers quite a bit, and that’s because the foundation of MULTIVERSUS is so similar. You can choose between popular characters such as Tom and Jerry, Shaggy, Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Velma, Harley Quinn, and many more. After you choose your character, you can play against other players online in a 4 versus 4 solo or co-op style.

I played with several characters throughout my initial playthrough and I did enjoy it. MultiVersus button layout is extremely similar to Super Smash Bros. You have a regular attack button, and a power attack button. You can hold these down, and combine these with your directional buttons to use the various attacks to hit enemy players, which is almost identical to Super Smash Bros. So if you have played and enjoyed that series, then you can probably step into MultiVersus without even watching the tutorials.

You can defeat other players, by simply knocking them off of the stage when their damage gets too high. Getting knocked off of the stage with a low score is virtually non-existent here as each character has a variety of ways to jump back on stage. I did find this to be much easier than in Super Smash Bros., but MultiVersus differs here as the game has a huge emphasis on teamwork.

Teamwork Is Key To Victory

Even though this game is so similar to other games in this genre it manages to stay both a fun and competitive experience. Each player has unique abilities that are a pleasure to use, and can either help you or your team. MultiVersus emphasis teamwork in the way many characters use their abilities. The abilities can be used to aid your teammates directly or indirectly. One example is when you select Lebron James from the Space Jam movie. Lebron can pass the ball to another player, which can then be used to hit the enemy team. There are other characters that can use abilities to even stop their teammates from being knocked off of the stage, Reindog is one example here. Reindog can lasso it’s teammates to rescue them from being taken out by the opposing players. When I first saw this ability, I did not think it would be so troublesome in battle, but if you are facing a team that knows how to use it properly it can make winning the battle a challenge.

So if you want to excel in MultiVersus, you’ll want to excel at teamwork.

The Characters

There are currently 19 playable characters, and many can be unlocked through gameplay or by purchasing them using the in-game currency known as Gleamium. When you first open the beta, you’ll have the choice between Garnet (Steven Universe), Finn (Adventure Time), Wonder Woman (DC Comics), Superman (DC Comics), and Reindog (Player First Games). On the game’s website, you can view the full list of unlockable characters, and since this game is connected to Warner Bros. I’m sure this list is short compared to the many characters the developer has in store for us.

How To Play MULTIVERSUS

MultiVersus is currently playable on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. You can download the open beta now directly from your console and enjoy it for free. Keep in mind that since this is a free-to-play game, there will be options to purchase additional characters and future battle passes. The current season, or preseason ends on August 8th. Season One begins August 9th, and does not have a current end date.

Throughout each season you can unlock cosmetic items for each character, profile icons, character skins, and more items which will be revealed in future updates. If you are someone that would like to experience all that MultiVersus has to offer than you can purchase one of the games Founders Packs.

Future Battle Passes are bundled in the Founders Packs, and will give you banners, unique name plates, and Gleamium. It’s too early to tell if the battle passes are really worth it in my opinion, but as this game continues to roll out updates, we’ll keep you updated on this blog and on our YouTube Channel.

Final Thoughts

MULTIVERSUS is fun, and if I had to give it a score early on I’d say a 7 out of 10. This is just the beta, and there isn’t a whole lot to do yet, since the game isn’t officially released. In August, I plan on giving this game a much more detailed review for you all. For now, I recommend downloading this game, playing a few matches and seeing how you enjoy it.

Personally I can’t wait to see what characters are revealed as I feel this is where the game has the potential to be a great game. It has a solid foundation, and if you can get over how similar it is to others and just enjoy it for what it is, I think you can have hours of fun playing this with your friends.
