I’ve recently watched the Black Adam movie which stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and I’ve decided to share my thoughts with our readers. Black Adam is a movie that has received very harsh criticism from critics and some fans, but I honestly cannot understand why. This article will serve as my official Black Adam Review, and in it, I will be providing an overview of the movie. I’ll also share the things I liked about the film, as well as talk about a few of the critiques of the film which I’ve seen on Rotten Tomatoes.

There will be spoilers in my Black Adam Review, but I will try to keep them at a minimum as I would like you to watch this film for yourself. Without keeping you waiting any longer, let’s get into the review by starting with a synopsis of the film.

What Is Black Adam?

One of the critiques I’ve seen online is the film not really having a plot, well I can agree and disagree with this viewpoint for many reasons, but I’ll do my best to explain what little plot we have in this film. Black Adam is a film that is centered around our main protagonist, known as Teth-Adam, who is from an ancient civilization called Kahndaq. The citizens of Kahndaq were enslaved by their ruler who was after an ancient magical stone to build the Crown of Sabbac, which is a crown that serves as a key to the Kingdom of Hell. The wearer of the crown is embodied with the power of 6 powerful demons and is dubbed the Champion of Hell.

5,000 years later a young woman named Adrianna is searching for the crown and happens to stumble across the tomb where it and Teth-Adam are being held. We soon come to find out that our villain is amongst Adrianna’s group and is on a mission to obtain the crown, and use its power to regain control of Kahndaq as he is a direct descendent of the evil ruler from 5,000 years ago. While surrounded by the henchman in the ancient tomb, Adrianna summons Teth-Adam, the legendary protector of Kahndaq, to save her, but there is much more to Teth-Adam’s story. He immediately kills the henchman in a brutal fashion and doesn’t really seem to care about being involved in saving Adrianna or really helping anyone for that matter. Teth-Adam is later intercepted by the Justice Society of America who is summoned by, Amanda Waller, to stop Teth-Adam as they know his real history which I do not want to spoil for you in this article.

All of the players involved will have to settle their differences and work together to have hope of saving humanity from the Champion of Hell.

Despite its plot being a little bit all over the place, I still enjoyed Black Adam for what it is. It’s a wild ride from start to finish, and It is a breath of fresh air in the superhero genre. So many superhero movies and TV shows lately are either preaching to us about a particular social issue or are just written poorly. Black Adam knows the type of movie it is and does not try to hide that fact. It’s action-packed, so if you do not like action movies then you will want to shy away from Black Adam.

There are explosions, random character deaths, and brutality that you’d expect from a movie about a comic book movie villain. Since Black Adam is an anti-hero, there is a lot of dialogue about what it truly means to be a hero, with some characters admiring Adam’s ways of doing things, while others do what they can to stop him. Dwayne Johnson’s performance as Teth-Adam really surprised me here, although the script really doesn’t ask much of him in the way of dialogue, what’s there is delivered well. I was thoroughly impressed with his portrayal as I wasn’t sure if Johnson could pull off the villain, but he does so effortlessly and I think that’s partially due to the fact that Teth-Adam is really in between hero and villain. It just seemed like a perfect casting choice in my opinion.

Let’s talk briefly about the other characters in this movie.

The Justice Society of America, and Doctor Fate

All of the JLA members were great in this film, but the one that impressed me the most was Hawkman. To be honest, I wasn’t too thrilled about his character when I saw him in the initial trailer. He just seemed boring, and I thought he was just going to be a side character, but Hawkman was a stand out to me, he was tough and was a surprising challenge to Black Adam. He definitely was there to show the stark contrast between the beliefs of Adam versus traditional heroes, and I enjoyed every minute of the characters arguing and fighting.

Another stand-out performance for me was Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate. Doctor Fate was a character that I was just excited to see on screen, and Brosnan knocked this role out of the park. Doctor Fate’s powers were on full display, and Brosnan’s performance made me want a solely Doctor Fate film. The other two characters, Atom Smasher, and Cyclone were also great additions as well! Even with so many characters on screen, this film manages to give them all just the right amount of screen time and everyone seems to pull their weight beautifully.

Final Thoughts

Black Adam is an entertaining superhero movie, and I’d argue that is better than anything put out by Marvel recently. I’ve seen some critics’ reviews that mention how action-packed the film was, but I don’t think this is enough to deter most moviegoers. Yes, it’s action-packed, but it’s also a superhero movie. There are tons of fight scenes, and once the movie starts it really doesn’t slow down until the film wraps up so you could argue about the pacing as well if you were so critical. In my opinion, Black Adam is worth the watch, and if I had to give it a rating, I’d rate it an 8 out of 10.

I’ve given the film this review primarily due to the plot being a little weak, but the action, and heart that this film has is worth the watch. Now I’d like to hear from our readers. How did you enjoy the Black Adam movie? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
