Black Clover is a very popular shounen anime which began airing in 2017. The anime community have very mixed opinions regarding this anime, with some calling Black Clover a good modern shounen, whilst others thinking it is complete trash.

In my personal opinion, Black Clover is in most aspects a good modern shounen. Today, we will take a closer look at the different qualities of this anime and see first-hand if Black Clover is a good shounen anime or not, and why it may be part of the big 3 in Shounen anime.

Before going any further, let’s take a closer look at the plot of Black Clover.

The Plot

The plot of this anime follows the story of 2 orphans who were abandoned at the same church when they were just babies. Both of them were raised together, and they promised themselves that they would compete against each other for the title of Wizard King. As they grew up, Yuno discovered that he had amazing magical prowess and that he was naturally talented. On the other hand, Asta found out that he had no magical abilities at all.

When it was time for them to get their grimoire, Yuno got the four-leaf clover grimoire which is considered to be very rare. Sadly, Asta didn’t get a grimoire. Later on, we see Yuno getting into trouble, and whilst trying to save him Asta discovers his own grimoire, a five-leaf clover. With this, the journey of the two boys begins as they hope to become the Wizard King.

The plot of this anime is pretty strong and is filled with all of the beloved shounen tropes. Next, we are going to discuss why this show is worth taking the time to watch.

BRINGS SOMETHING NEW TO THE TABLE!

As I said, Black Clover has all of the usual shounen tropes. However, that doesn’t mean that it is a copy of other shounen series. This anime has a very unique and complex world of its own, and the story is completely different in comparison to any other shounen anime. As you keep watching the series, you continue to dive deeper into the world of Black Clover. The show introduces you to a vast cast of wonderful characters, who are all very endearing to watch.

SIMILARITY IS NOT A BAD THING!

As mentioned above, this show follows all of the usual shounen tropes. Whilst this can make Black Clover seem a little clichéd, it is not a bad thing for this anime. Black Clover follows the usual patterns in a very unique way which is very entertaining as a viewer. This show was particularly made with newcomers to the world of anime in mind.

THE ANIMATION IS BEAUTIFUL!

Whilst we all love our old shounen series, none of them had animation quite like this. Black Clover gives us very fluid and breathtaking animation, which quickly draws the viewer in. The world of anime needed a modern shounen like this containing the strong animation seen here.

Final Thoughts

Black Clover is overall a good anime which is worth your time as a viewer, although I wouldn’t necessarily call it a must-watch. This anime is definitely not as good as some of the big names in the world of shounen, but it is still a strong attempt within this genre.

I would recommend this anime to anyone who is new to the world of anime. I think that Black Clover is not a great title for avid anime watchers as they might find it a little repetitive and cliché.

This anime is entertaining, and it is definitely a good pick if you are looking for something to binge-watch. The characters and animation are top-notch, and the story is quite intriguing and captivating. If I was to give Black Clover a rating, I would give this anime an 8 out of a 10.
