Although shōnen can be really cool, and despite how interesting a great science fiction can be, sometimes we just need to sit down and watch something that can touch our hearts, and nothing does that better than these four anime movies we have gathered. Unless you are an absolute monster or have a stone for a heart, you will at the very least get a bit sentimental while watching the movies on this list of top 4 anime movies that can make you cry.

Hotarubi No Mori E

Boy with a Mask sitting next to little girl under a tree

Hotaru Takegawa is a 6 years old girl who usually spends the summers at her grandfather’s house. In the vicinity of the town where she lives there is a forest, Takegawa goes there but then she cannot find the way back to the town; Lost and helpless, she begins to cry, but it is at this moment when Gin appears to help her out. Although Gin looks like an ordinary guy, he turns out to be one of the many spirits that inhabit the forest. Gin has a peculiarity; if they are ever touched by a human, they disappear. Over time, as Takegawa grows up, both of them develop a beautiful friendship that little by little seems to be turning into something more.

Grave of the Fireflies

Young boy and girl standing in a field surrounded by fireflies

In 1998 the well-known Ghibli Studio released their third movie, Grave of the Fireflies, the film takes place in 1945, in the final stages of World War II, in which Japan was under constant bombardment by enemy air forces. While this happened, two kids, 14 years old Seita, and his 5 years old sister, Setsuko will do anything to survive by themselves in the worst scenario possible. The movie shows how devastating war can be for everyone, especially for kids, who despite having absolutely nothing to do with war, suffer all of the consequences.

Some people who are not used to watching anime tend to think that anime is just for kids, well here’s a movie that you can show them to prove them wrong.

Koe no Katachi (A Silent Voice)

School dramas are very common in anime, so seeing one on this list might not be surprising at all, however, this movie is not a typical school drama that just involves teenagers in love, it is actually way more complex. This movie talks about delicate topics such as depression, guilt, social anxiety, and even suicide. This means it has an important emotional charge, and it is a much more mature movie than we might think at first. Even though the story can be quite sad, it tries to make us think deeply about important issues and offers important lessons to consider.

Kotonoha no Niwa (The Garden of Words)

Image of man and woman sitting under a tree

During the rainy season in Japan, Takao, a 15-year-old student, skips class every time it rains to go to a park and draw shoes, he does this because he wants to become a shoemaker. It is in that park where he meets Yukino, a woman who is 12 years older than him who enjoys drinking beer and eating a lot of chocolate. From that first meeting on, every time it rained, they both met under the same roof in the same park, a place where little by little they will get to know each other, but what will happen when the rainy season ends?

A faint clap of thunder

Clouded skies

Perhaps rain comes
